ICU14017

Case IH ICU14017 – ICU: Fuel Level Sensor Voltage Out of Range Low

Issue description

The electronic control system is receiving a voltage signal from the fuel tank sending unit that is below the minimum acceptable threshold (often below 0.125V). This condition typically points to a short-to-ground in the sensor's signal wire, a completely failed/shorted fuel level sensor, or a malfunctioning instrument cluster controller.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum 235
  • Magnum 245
  • Magnum 250
  • Magnum 280
  • Magnum 305
  • Magnum 310
  • Magnum 315
  • Magnum 340

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the fuel level sensor and the instrument cluster for chafed or broken wires, corrosion, or loose connections (especially near the sending unit)

  2. Check the fuel level sensor for a clean and secure ground connection, as a poor ground frequently causes incorrect readings

  3. Test the circuit by grounding the signal wire from the sending unit with the ignition on (the fuel gauge should show a full reading on some models)

  4. Use a multimeter to check for proper voltage at the fuel level sensor's input connector (refer to the service manual for specifications); a lower than specified voltage could indicate a problem with the wiring from the battery

  5. Test the fuel level sensor resistance with a multimeter (set to Ohms) by disconnecting the electrical connector, connecting leads to the signal and ground terminals, and manually moving the float arm from empty to full; the reading should change smoothly without erratic jumps or open circuits

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical sparks, work in a well-ventilated area, and take all necessary precautions when working with the fuel system.

  2. Access fuel sending unit

Locate the fuel sending unit on the fuel tank. Remove the access plate near the fuel filler neck, or drain and remove the fuel tank if necessary depending on the model.

  3. Remove old sending unit

Disconnect the electrical connector and fuel lines. Clean the area to prevent debris from falling into the tank, remove the retaining ring or bolts, and carefully lift the old unit out.

  4. Install new sending unit

Verify the new part matches the old one. Install with a new gasket or O-ring, ensuring proper alignment.

  5. Reassemble components

Tighten the retaining ring or screws to manufacturer specifications (use a star pattern if screws are used to ensure a proper seal). Reconnect the electrical connector and fuel lines.

  6. Verify repair

Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, verify the fuel gauge reads correctly, clear the ICU14017 fault code, and check for fuel leaks.
