Case IH L – Hitch Controller: Load control circuit failure

Issue description

The system has detected an electrical fault, out-of-range signal, or complete failure in the circuit for the load control potentiometer (also known as the draft control potentiometer). When this code is active, the hitch system typically operates in a DEGRADED state.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Maxxum
  • 7200/8900 series Magnum
  • Magnum 7100 Series
  • Magnum 7200 Series
  • 7110
  • 7120
  • 7130
  • 7140
  • 7210
  • 7220
  • 7230
  • 7240
  • 7250

Check the cause

  1. Test the potentiometer resistance by disconnecting the connector at the load control potentiometer in the cab and connecting an ohmmeter between terminal A and terminal C (should read 10,000 ohms ± 10%, or 9,000 to 11,000 ohms)

  2. Check the wiring harness for damaged wires or loose connectors

  3. Test for continuity between the controller and the potentiometer (specifically between controller terminal 34 / red wire #502 and terminal C of the potentiometer connector, as well as the blue wire #502 and terminal B)

Repair steps

  1. Replace the Potentiometer

If the load control potentiometer fails the resistance test (does not read 10,000 ohms ± 10%), remove and replace it.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the potentiometer tests good but continuity is broken, repair the damaged wires or connectors in the harness.

  3. Replace the Controller

If both the potentiometer and the wiring harness test perfectly fine, the hitch controller itself has failed and must be replaced.

  4. Recalibrate the Hitch

The hitch system must be recalibrated every time a hitch component (including the potentiometer or controller) is replaced or adjusted.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Load Control Potentiometer

    A186061

Also listed as Hitch Travel Potentiometer or Draft Control Potentiometer. Fits Case IH Magnum 7100 and 7200 series tractors. Rated for 10,000 ohms.

  • Hitch Controller / Control Module

Varies heavily by specific tractor serial number and exact model.
