L09

Case IH L09 – Front Suspended Axle Controller (GCM1 or XCM): Lockout Valve Lower Solenoid Not Working

Issue description

The electronic control system has detected a malfunction in the circuit responsible for the solenoid that lowers or locks the front suspension. The underlying condition is typically an electrical failure, such as an open circuit, a short to ground, or an overcurrent condition at the solenoid coil, though it can occasionally be caused by a mechanically stuck valve spool.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • Case IH MXM Series
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify the tractor's battery voltage and check the suspension system fuses (e.g., 12VM, 12VF1, 12VF3) as low voltage can trigger false solenoid errors.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the front suspension lockout valve block for rubbed wires, corrosion inside the connector, or an open circuit/short to ground.

  3. Perform a solenoid swap test by swapping the lower solenoid coil with the raise solenoid coil to isolate whether the issue is the wiring or the coil itself.

  4. Check the front suspension hydraulic components (hoses, fittings, and cylinders) for leaks or physical damage that might cause the system to bind mechanically.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, and safely support the front chassis to remove weight from the front suspension.

  2. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery for a short period. This prevents electrical shorts during repair and helps reset the electronic control systems.

  3. Locate the Valve

Locate the suspended axle lockout valve block (typically mounted near the front axle or saddle suspension area).

  4. Remove the Solenoid

Disconnect the electrical connector from the lower lockout solenoid. Unscrew the retaining nut and slide the solenoid coil off the cartridge valve. If the cartridge valve itself is mechanically stuck, unscrew the cartridge from the valve block.

  5. Install New Parts

Install the replacement cartridge valve and/or solenoid coil. Torque to the manufacturer's specifications.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical connector and reconnect the tractor's battery.

  7. Calibration

Start the tractor and perform the front suspension auto-calibration procedure. The system must be able to reach its minimum and maximum positions to clear the U05/L06 uncalibrated codes and resume normal operation.
