NH14052

Case IH NH14052 – ICP: Fuel Level Sensor Short to Ground

Issue description

The fault code NH14052 indicates that the fuel level sensor's electrical circuit has a short to ground. The control module has detected that the signal wire from the fuel sending unit is electrically connected to the vehicle's chassis ground, causing an abnormally low voltage reading. This condition typically results in an incorrect fuel gauge reading, often showing 'empty' or zero, and can trigger a warning on the instrument panel or cause system malfunctions.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading from the fuel tank sending unit to the main chassis harness for chafing, pinched wires, or damage that could cause the signal wire to contact the frame.

  2. Check for intermittent faults by wiggling the harness while observing the gauge or fault code status.

  3. Ensure the fuel sending unit and the gauge cluster have a clean, tight connection to the chassis ground.

  4. Perform a gauge jumper test: disconnect the wiring harness at the fuel sending unit, turn the ignition on, and ground the signal wire to the chassis. If the gauge reads 'full', the wiring and gauge are functioning correctly, pointing to a faulty sender.

  5. Perform a sending unit resistance test: disconnect the sender and measure resistance between the signal and ground terminals. Sudden jumps or drops to near-zero resistance indicate an internal short in the sender. For some Steiger models, the expected range is approximately 30 Ohms (full) to 240 Ohms (empty).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the vehicle's battery before beginning any electrical repairs to prevent short circuits and ensure safety.

  2. Isolate the fault

Perform the diagnostic checks to determine if the short to ground lies in the wiring harness or the fuel sending unit itself.

  3. Repair wiring harness

If a short is found in the wiring harness, cut out the compromised wire, splice in a new piece of the same gauge wire using weatherproof heat-shrink butt connectors, and securely wrap the repair in high-quality electrical tape or loom.

  4. Replace fuel sending unit

If the sending unit is internally shorted, remove it from the tank (cleaning the area first to prevent debris entry). Install the new sender with a new gasket or seal to prevent leaks.

  5. Reconnect and test

Reconnect the wiring harness and the battery. Turn the ignition on to verify that the fuel gauge is reading correctly and the NH14052 fault code is cleared.
