Case IH NH15009 – Steering Controller (A-061): Change Valve Solenoid Short Circuit Across
Issue description
The Steering Controller has detected a short circuit within the electrical circuit of the Change Valve Solenoid. This solenoid is an integral part of the Fast Steer (or Quick Steer) system, which reduces the number of steering wheel turns required for lock-to-lock steering at low speeds. A short circuit indicates that electrical current is bypassing its intended path, likely due to a failure within the solenoid coil itself or damage to the connecting wiring harness, which will prevent the Fast Steer system from operating properly.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the Fast Steer change valve solenoid for signs of damage, such as chafing, cuts, or melted insulation.
Check the solenoid connector (identified as X627 in some documents) for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-out pins.
Perform a solenoid resistance test: disconnect the solenoid and measure resistance across its terminals with a multimeter. A reading near zero ohms indicates a shorted coil. An 'infinite' or 'OL' (Open Loop) reading indicates an open coil, which would typically trigger a different fault code (e.g., NH15008) but is still a sign of a failed solenoid. Normal resistance is typically between 0 and 50 ohms.
Perform a wiring harness test: with the solenoid and steering controller disconnected, check for continuity to ground and for shorts between the wires in the harness running to the change valve solenoid.
Repair steps
Prepare machine for service
Park the tractor on a level surface, shut down the engine, and engage the parking brake. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure by cycling the steering and other hydraulic controls. Disconnect the battery.
Locate the solenoid
Locate the change valve solenoid on the Fast Steer valve assembly, which is typically coupled to the steering motor. On Puma models, wiring diagrams identify this solenoid as Y015.
Remove the faulty solenoid
Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut securing the coil, and slide the coil off the valve stem.
Install the new solenoid
Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem, ensuring it is properly seated. Reinstall the retaining nut and tighten it to the manufacturer's specification. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the coil.
Reconnect and test
Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery. Start the tractor, clear the fault codes using the diagnostic menu or a service tool, and operate the steering system to verify that the Fast Steer function is working correctly and the code does not return.
