NH2124

Case IH NH2124 – TCU: Flywheel Torque Sensor Not Calibrated

Issue description

The Flywheel Torque Sensor has not been properly calibrated. This sensor measures the torque output from the engine's flywheel, providing critical data for the transmission and engine control systems to ensure proper performance and efficient shifting. An uncalibrated sensor can lead to inaccurate torque readings, resulting in improper engine performance and harsh or erratic shifting.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum 115
  • Maxxum 125
  • Maxxum 135
  • Maxxum 145
  • Maxxum 150
  • Farmall 100M
  • Farmall 110M
  • Farmall 120M
  • MXU Series
  • Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the flywheel torque sensor (located on the engine or transmission housing near the flywheel) and its wiring harness for physical damage, contamination, loose connections, or corrosion.

  2. Check for other active or stored fault codes, particularly those related to sensor supply voltage (e.g., ENG 187) or communication errors (e.g., ENG 211), which can prevent a successful calibration.

  3. Verify system voltage to ensure the battery and charging system are functioning correctly, as low voltage can cause multiple electronic faults.

  4. Test the sensor's circuit integrity using a digital multimeter to check for proper voltage, continuity, and ensure there are no shorts to ground following manufacturer specifications.

Repair steps

  1. Warm up the tractor

Ensure the transmission oil is at operating temperature (typically above 140°F / 60°C). Cold oil may trigger an error code (e.g., U19) during calibration.

  2. Position the tractor

Park the tractor on level ground, lower all implements, and engage the park brake.

  3. Enter calibration mode

Access the diagnostic 'H-Menu'. For Magnum/Puma models, press and hold the 'rabbit' and 'turtle' buttons simultaneously while starting the engine. For MX Magnum, hold the 'program' button while turning the key on. Other models may require accessing a diagnostic connector.

  4. Navigate to transmission calibration

Locate the transmission calibration section (often labeled 'Trans Setup', 'H1', or 'Auto Calibration') to calibrate the synchros, clutches, and flywheel torque sensor.

  5. Set engine speed

Adjust the engine speed to the prompted RPM, typically around 1200 RPM. Incorrect RPM may trigger error codes like U21 or U22.

  6. Initiate calibration

Follow the on-screen prompts, which may involve moving the shuttle lever to forward. Allow the tractor to automatically cycle through the calibration until the display indicates 'END'.

  7. Save and exit

Turn the key off to save the new calibration values.
