NH4129

Case IH NH4129 – ACM/TCM: Remote No.3 Control Message not plausible

Issue description

The main tractor control module has received a CAN bus signal from the #3 electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve that is unexpected, illogical, or outside the normal range. This indicates a breakdown in communication where the message sent by the valve's microprocessor is corrupt or ill-timed, rather than a complete loss of communication.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma 115
  • Puma 125
  • Puma 140
  • Puma 155
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 225
  • Maxxum 115
  • Maxxum 125
  • Magnum Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the tractor's fault code memory for other active codes related to CAN bus communication, power supply (under/over-voltage), or other remote valves

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the #3 remote valve for chafing, corrosion, pinched wires, or loose connections

  3. Verify the remote valve is receiving correct voltage and has a solid ground connection using a digital multimeter

  4. Attempt to re-calibrate the electro-hydraulic remotes through the tractor's diagnostic 'H' menu

  5. Swap the electronic control portion (pilot head/solenoid) of the #3 remote with an adjacent functioning remote (e.g., #2 or #4) to see if the fault follows the component

Repair steps

  1. Perform initial diagnostics

Complete all wiring, power, ground, and component swapping checks to isolate whether the fault lies in the harness or the valve's electronic controller.

  2. Prepare for valve removal

If the valve controller is faulty, relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system and thoroughly clean the area around the remote valve stack to prevent contamination.

  3. Disconnect valve connections

Disconnect the electrical connector from the #3 remote valve. Carefully disconnect the hydraulic lines from the valve's couplers, preparing for residual fluid loss.

  4. Remove faulty valve slice

Loosen and remove the long truss rods holding the valve stack together. Separate the valve slices and remove the faulty #3 valve section.

  5. Install replacement valve

Install the new valve slice, ensuring all O-rings and seals are correctly seated. Reassemble the valve stack, tighten the truss rods to the manufacturer's specified torque, and reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical connector.

  6. Test and calibrate

Start the tractor and check for hydraulic leaks. Enter the diagnostic menu to clear all fault codes. Perform the EHR valve calibration or renumbering procedure if required by the model, then operate the remote to verify the repair.
