NH5036

Case IH NH5036 – Transmission, Armrest (ARM), or PTO Controller: PTO Failure to Start

Issue description

The power take-off (PTO) system has been commanded to engage but has failed to begin operation as expected. The control system has detected a condition preventing the PTO clutch from engaging and rotating the output shaft, which could be caused by electrical faults, sensor failures, or hydraulic pressure issues.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma 155
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 195
  • Maxxum 110

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the PTO engagement lever or switch is fully activated, the tractor is in the correct gear, and engine RPM is sufficient (above 800-900 RPM)

  2. Check transmission and hydraulic fluid levels, and inspect for a blocked transmission or hydraulic oil filter

  3. Review the fuse box for any blown fuses or faulty relays related to the PTO circuit

  4. Visually inspect wiring harnesses and connectors for the PTO switch, PTO solenoid, and PTO speed sensors for corrosion, damage, or loose connections

  5. Ensure all safety interlocks, such as the seat switch, are functioning correctly

Repair steps

  1. Retrieve fault codes

Use a diagnostic service tool or the tractor's display to read all active and stored fault codes. Look for specific codes related to the PTO speed sensor or brake switch to pinpoint the root cause.

  2. Test PTO engagement switch

Using a multimeter, test the in-cab and any fender-mounted PTO switches for proper continuity and voltage when operated. Replace if faulty.

  3. Test PTO solenoid

Locate the PTO control solenoid near the hydraulic remotes or PTO valve block. Test for correct resistance across its terminals and check for power and ground at the connector when the PTO is commanded on.

  4. Inspect and test PTO speed sensors

Inspect the PTO speed sensors for damage or metal filings on the magnetic tip. Test the sensor's output and wiring back to the controller. On tractors with two sensors, verify the speed readings match.

  5. Inspect hydraulic circuit

If electrical components function correctly, pressure test the hydraulic circuit to diagnose a faulty hydraulic pump, a stuck PTO control valve, or internal leaks in the PTO clutch pack seals.

  6. Perform PTO calibration

If components like a solenoid or sensor were replaced, perform a PTO calibration procedure to allow the controller to learn the operational parameters of the new component.
