NH6022

Case IH NH6022 – TCU: FWD Solenoid Stuck Off

Issue description

The Transmission Control Unit (TCU) has detected that the Front Wheel Drive (FWD) or Mechanical Front-Wheel Drive (MFWD) solenoid is in a stuck-off state. This indicates an electrical or mechanical failure preventing the controller from energizing the solenoid to engage or disengage the front-wheel-drive clutch pack. As a result, the forward drive system may not operate properly, causing the front-wheel drive to either fail to engage or become permanently stuck engaged.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum 5100
  • Maxxum 5200
  • Maxxum MX
  • Maxxum 100
  • Maxxum 110
  • Maxxum 115

  • Puma 170
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 185
  • Case IH JXU
  • Case IH MXM

Check the cause

  1. Check for voltage at the solenoid's electrical connector with the FWD system activated (expect over 10 volts, ideally battery voltage).

  2. Inspect the fuse panel for blown fuses related to the transmission or FWD system, which could indicate a short circuit.

  3. Swap the FWD relay with a known good one from a different circuit (e.g., differential lock) to test for a faulty relay.

  4. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the FWD solenoid for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.

  5. Measure coil resistance across the solenoid terminals using a multimeter (typically 7 to 9 ohms; infinite resistance indicates an open loop, while very low resistance indicates a short circuit).

  6. Bench test the solenoid by applying 12V power and ground directly to the terminals to listen for a distinct 'click' indicating internal plunger movement.

  7. Inspect the solenoid for mechanical issues, such as a swelled or cracked plastic casing, or a stuck valve spool within the valve block.

  8. Perform a hydraulic pressure test on the circuit controlled by the solenoid to distinguish between an electrical failure and an internal hydraulic leak or clutch pack issue.

Repair steps

  1. Ensure Safety

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the battery before performing electrical work.

  2. Locate the FWD Solenoid

The FWD solenoid is typically located on a valve block on the side or top of the transmission housing. On some Maxxum models, it may be accessible from above by removing a plate under the cab floor mat.

  3. Perform Diagnostic Checks

Follow the diagnostic steps outlined above to confirm whether the fault lies with the solenoid itself, the wiring, or the control system.

  4. Swap Solenoids (for Diagnosis)

If accessible and identical, you can swap the FWD solenoid coil with the one for the differential lock or another function. If the problem moves to the other system (e.g., the diff lock now fails), it confirms the solenoid coil is faulty.

  5. Replace the Solenoid

Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid. Remove the nut holding the electromagnetic coil onto the valve stem and slide the coil off, or if replacing the entire valve cartridge, use a wrench to unscrew it from the valve block (be prepared for some hydraulic oil to leak out). Install the new solenoid valve or coil, ensuring any O-rings are properly seated and lubricated. Tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque and reconnect the electrical connector.

  6. Clear Fault Codes

After the repair, reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and use the onboard diagnostics or a service tool to clear the NH6022 fault code.

  7. Verify Operation

Operate the FWD system to ensure it engages and disengages correctly and that the fault code does not reappear.
