NH8033

Case IH NH8033 – Front PTO: Front PTO Cab N/C Switch Open Circuit

Issue description

The Front Power Take-Off (PTO) switch in the cab utilizes two sets of contacts for safety and redundancy: a normally open (N/O) circuit and a normally closed (N/C) circuit. This code triggers when the control module detects an open circuit (infinite resistance/no voltage return) on the normally closed circuit of the switch while the PTO is supposed to be disengaged. This typically indicates a failed switch internally, a disconnected plug, or a broken wire in the harness.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum 235
  • Magnum 340
  • Puma 150
  • Puma 155
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 230
  • Puma 240

Check the cause

  1. Perform a visual inspection of the front PTO switch in the cab, its connector, and the wiring harness for frayed wires, loose connections, or corrosion.

  2. Perform a 'Click Test' by turning the key to the 'RUN' position (engine off) and engaging the PTO switch to listen for an audible click from the PTO clutch solenoid.

  3. Disconnect the battery, access the rear of the PTO switch, disconnect its wiring connector, and test the switch for continuity on the normally closed (N/C) circuit using a multimeter (should have continuity when OFF, and an open circuit when ON).

  4. Check the wiring harness between the switch and the PTO control module for open circuits by testing end-to-end continuity.

  5. Check for blown fuses and verify the power supply to the PTO system, as low voltage (AD12VU2) can also be a factor.

Repair steps

  1. Ensure safety

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery before beginning any repairs.

  2. Access the switch

Remove any necessary dashboard panels or covers to gain access to the back of the front PTO switch in the cab.

  3. Disconnect wiring

Take a photo or label the wires connected to the switch to ensure correct reassembly, then disconnect the wiring harness.

  4. Remove faulty switch

Release the retaining clips or unscrew the retaining nut to remove the old switch from its mounting location.

  5. Install new switch

Securely fasten the new PTO switch into the dashboard and reconnect the wiring harness according to your labels or photo.

  6. Reassemble and test

Reinstall all panels, reconnect the battery, and test the front PTO operation to ensure the fault code has cleared.
