Case IH P1D – PCU / EDC: Voltage Monitoring, Data Valid But Above Normal Range
Issue description
The control module's internal voltage monitoring circuit is detecting a voltage level that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold. This is typically caused by an overcharging alternator (system voltage spiking too high), a wiring harness short where a lower-voltage circuit (like a 5V reference) is shorted to a 12V power source, or an internal failure within the module itself.

Check the cause
Charging System Test (Overcharging cause): With the engine running, use a multimeter to measure the voltage across the battery terminals. Normal charging voltage should be between 13.5V and 14.5V. If the voltage exceeds 15V, the alternator's voltage regulator is faulty.
Harness and Connector Inspection (Wiring cause): Power OFF the tractor and turn the keyswitch OFF. Disconnect the connectors at the PCU/ECU and inspect for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins.
Short-to-Power Test (Wiring cause): Disconnect the connectors at both ends of the affected circuit to prevent false readings. Set your multimeter to measure voltage and check the sensor supply lines for a short to a 12-volt source.
Ground Check: Verify that all cab and chassis grounds are clean and tight, as a floating ground can cause erratic high-voltage readings.
Repair steps
Secure the machine
Turn the keyswitch OFF and disconnect the battery if you are going to perform harness repairs.
Address the alternator (Overcharging cause)
If your diagnostic checks revealed an overcharging condition (voltage exceeding 15V), replace the alternator or the alternator's voltage regulator assembly.
Repair the wiring harness (Short-to-power cause)
If you found a short to a high-voltage source in the wiring harness, open the harness outer covering. Cut away the damaged wire section, splice in a new wire, and wrap each repaired lead with vinyl insulation tape or heat shrink. Ensure you tape at least 2 inches (50 mm) past each end of the cut-away area.
Test and replace the module (Internal failure cause)
Reconnect all harnesses and power the tractor on. Clear the fault codes. If the charging system is outputting correct voltage and the wiring harness tests perfectly, but the T1D code immediately returns, the internal voltage monitoring circuit inside the control module has failed. In this case, the PCU/ECU must be replaced.
