Case IH P1E – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Pump Control Unit (PCU): Monitoring Module, Data Valid But Above Normal Range

Issue description

A communication and system monitoring fault where the data signal between the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the Pump Control Unit (PCU) is recognized as a valid format but the value exceeds the normal operational threshold. This causes the tractor to enter a limp-home condition, restricting fuel supply, reducing engine performance, and limiting engine speed to a maximum of 1300 RPM. Note: The code is actually t1E (3047-0) but is frequently misread as P1E.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the code is t1E (3047-0) and check if the related code t1F (3047-3: Monitoring module, shorted to high source) is also present.

  2. Turn the Keyswitch OFF and disconnect the battery (or pull the specified circuit fuse) to prevent false multimeter readings.

  3. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors at both the ECM and the PCU ends to isolate the circuit.

  4. Set a multimeter to measure Ohms (resistance). Place the black lead on a clean, unpainted metal part of the chassis to act as a ground, and use the red lead to probe the connector pins one at a time.

  5. Ensure the resistance values fall within the specified manual limits and that there is no short to a high power source or ground between the ECM and PCU.

Repair steps

  1. Inspect wiring harness

    Physically inspect the wiring harness that runs between the Engine Control Module and the Pump Control Unit. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points.

  2. Inspect and clean connectors

    Inspect the pins on both the ECM and PCU connectors. Clean any corrosion, dirt, or moisture, which can cause high resistance and skew the data range.

  3. Repair wiring

    If the multimeter tests in the diagnostic phase reveal a short or an open circuit, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  4. Replace control module

    If the wiring harness and connectors test perfectly fine, the internal monitoring circuit of either the Engine Control Module or the Pump Control Unit has failed. The faulty module must be replaced.

  5. Perform calibration

    If a module is replaced, or if the non-volatile memory is reset, perform the EDC/Transmission Calibration Set Up Procedure. Start the engine, set the engine speed to 1200 RPM, and use the High and Low range buttons to initiate the 'CAL' sequence on the display until 'END' appears.
