Case IH P1F – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Monitoring Module, Shorted To High Source
Issue description
The electronic system has detected that the voltage on the monitoring module circuit is higher than the expected normal range, typically indicating that the circuit is short-circuited directly to a 12-volt power source.
Applies to these machines
10 machines- MXM
- Case IH MXM Series
- MXM120
- MXM130
- MXM140
- MXM155
- MXM175
- MXM190
- Case IH Magnum
- Case IH Puma
Check the cause
Power Down: Turn the keyswitch OFF and disconnect the battery power.
Isolate the Circuit: Disconnect the connectors at both ends of the affected monitoring module circuit to prevent false multimeter readings.
Voltage Measurement (Short to 12V): Set your multimeter to measure voltage. Check the circuit pins to see if they are receiving unintended 12V power (which triggers the shorted to high source code).
Continuity Tests: Check the circuit for a short to ground and for open circuits (broken wires).
Visual Inspection: Inspect the harness outer covering and the metal connector pins for corrosion, rubbing, or melted insulation that could bridge the wire to a power source.
Repair steps
Disconnect Connectors
Unplug the affected connectors from the Engine Control Module and the wiring harness.
Locate the Short
Trace the wiring harness routing to find where the wire is chafed or pinched against a 12V power wire.
Repair the Harness
If a short is found in the wiring harness, use a CNH harness repair kit. Use the correct extraction tool to remove the damaged pin from the connector, splice in a new section of wire, and reinsert the pin.
Test the Module
If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine (no shorts to high voltage), the internal circuitry of the Engine Control Module (ECM) has likely failed and is shorting internally.
Replace/Reprogram
Replace the ECM if it is internally shorted. Note that a new ECM will require dealer calibration/programming to match the tractor.
Clear Codes
Reconnect all components, restore battery power, and clear the fault codes to verify the repair.
