P21

Case IH P21 – Electronic Management Unit (EMU): 4WD Solenoid Stuck Off

Issue description

The electronic control system has detected that the four-wheel-drive (FWD/4WD) engagement solenoid is failing to activate or is stuck in the 'off' position. This is typically caused by an open circuit, a failed solenoid coil, or a wiring harness issue preventing the solenoid from receiving or utilizing the engagement signal.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM Series
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • MX Series
  • TG Series
  • CVX Series
  • CVX 170
  • Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Perform a battery reset by disconnecting the tractor's battery for a short period to reset the electronic control systems and clear transient errors.

  2. Perform a circuit test: With the keystart OFF, disconnect the FWD electrical connector (C034). Turn the keystart ON, select 2WD, turn the key OFF and then ON again. Observe if the error code remains P21 or changes to P22 or P23 to isolate the wiring harness/EMU from the solenoid.

  3. Check the physical resistance of the solenoid coil using a multimeter to confirm if the internal coil is open or shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on level ground, lower all equipment to the ground, place all shift levers in neutral, block the front and rear wheels, and turn the key OFF.

  2. Removal

Locate the 4WD solenoid valve on the transmission/MFD housing. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the solenoid.

  3. Replacement

Remove the retaining nut or fastener holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old solenoid off and install the new OEM replacement. Secure the fastener and reconnect the wiring harness.

  4. Calibration

Perform a Transmission/EDC Calibration, which is required whenever a PWM solenoid valve has been replaced or the non-volatile memory has been reset. This generally involves holding specific touch pads (like the High and Low range buttons or Differential Lock pads) while turning the key start ON, setting engine speed to 1200 ERPM, and driving a marked 100-meter track to write the new values into the EMU memory.
