Case IH P2C – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Main Vehicle PCU: Battery Voltage, Data Valid But Above Normal Range

Issue description

This code indicates an overvoltage condition. The control module is receiving a voltage reading from the electrical system that is recognized as a valid data format, but the value exceeds the maximum safe operating threshold (typically anything over 15 volts on a 12V system). This is almost always caused by an alternator that is overcharging due to a failed internal voltage regulator.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a live voltage test: Start the engine and set the throttle to around 1,500 RPM. Use a digital multimeter to measure the voltage directly across the battery terminals. If the reading is above 14.5V - 15.0V, the alternator's voltage regulator has failed and is overcharging the system.

  2. Perform an ECU pin test: If the battery voltage is normal (13.5V - 14.2V) at the battery, the issue may be a wiring short. Disconnect the harness at the transmission controller and measure the voltage at the power supply pins to see if it is receiving a spiked voltage from a shorted wire.

  3. Inspect ground connections: Check the main chassis-to-cab and battery-to-chassis ground cables. A loose or heavily corroded ground can cause the alternator to misread system resistance and spike the voltage.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Inspect the Battery

    Because the system was overcharging, check the battery for signs of boiling, bulging, or acid leaks. Clean the battery terminals thoroughly.

  3. Remove the Drive Belt

    Use a breaker bar to relieve tension on the serpentine belt tensioner and slip the belt off the alternator pulley.

  4. Remove the Alternator

    Disconnect the heavy-gauge B+ wire and the electrical connector plug from the rear of the alternator. Remove the mounting bolts and extract the alternator.

  5. Install the New Alternator

    Mount the replacement alternator, torque the bolts to OEM specifications, and reconnect the electrical terminals.

  6. Reinstall the Belt

    Route the serpentine belt back over the pulley and ensure the tensioner applies proper force.

  7. Verify Repair

    Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the tractor and test the voltage at the battery again. It should now hold steady between 13.5V and 14.2V.

  8. Clear Codes

    Use the tractor's H-Menu (diagnostic menu) or a service tool to clear the T2C fault code from the transmission controller.
