P38

Case IH P38 – PCU (Power Control Unit) / Transmission Controller: Vehicle CAN Bus Transmit, Data Valid But Above Normal Range

Issue description

This indicates a communication error on the tractor's Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The transmitting module is sending data that is properly formatted (valid), but the actual sensor values or data parameters contained within the message exceed the maximum threshold programmed into the controller's normal operating range.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • TM115
  • TM165

Check the cause

  1. Check for Related Codes: Look for accompanying codes like T39 (Vehicle CAN Bus Transmit, Shorted To High Source) or T3A (PCU Initialization, Data Valid But Above Normal Range), which can isolate the issue to a short circuit.

  2. Voltage & Ground Tests: Since the data is "above normal range," check the sensor supply voltages and battery voltage at the PCU. An overvoltage condition or a short to a high-voltage source can cause the transmitted data to spike out of range.

  3. Harness Inspection: Inspect the CAN bus twisted-pair wiring between the PCU, the Electronic Management Unit (EMU), and the instrument cluster for chafing, corrosion, or pin fitment issues.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down & Inspect

Turn off the key switch and disconnect the battery. Locate the PCU and inspect the main harness connectors.

  2. Repair Wiring

If any CAN wires are found shorting to a power source (causing the above-range data), repair the wiring using a CAN bus connector repair kit.

  3. Component Replacement

If the wiring is intact but the PCU is internally failing to process/transmit correct data ranges, the PCU or a related transmission potentiometer may need to be replaced.

  4. Transmission/EDC Calibration

If a mechanical repair was effected, a potentiometer/solenoid was replaced, or the PCU's non-volatile memory was reset, you must perform a transmission calibration.

  5. Calibration Steps (H1 Clutch and Synchroniser)

Apply the parking brake, turn off the A/C, and deselect all electrical/hydraulic services. Press and hold the High and Low range buttons, then start the engine. Release the buttons when ''CAL'' appears on the transmission display. Set engine speed to 1200 ERPM. Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the clutches until ''END'' displays, signifying completion.
