P39

Case IH P39 – Digital Instrument Cluster (DIC) / Electronic Management Unit (EMU) / System Control Module (SCM): Incorrect voltage on fender mounted rear PTO switch input (if fitted)

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the external rear fender Power Take-Off (PTO) switch that falls outside the expected normal operating parameters. This typically points to an electrical short, an open circuit, wiring damage, or an internally failed switch.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • Maxxum
  • Puma

Check the cause

  1. Verify Fitment: Ensure the tractor is actually equipped with a fender-mounted PTO switch, as the code specifies '(if fitted)'.

  2. Connector Pin Inspection: Disconnect the fender switch and make sure that no pins have been pushed back into the switch connector housing, which can cause poor contact.

  3. Harness Inspection: Check the wiring harness leading to the rear fender for any signs of rodent damage, chafing, or severed wires.

  4. Fuse Check: Check the tractor's fuse panel for any blown fuses that supply power to the PTO switch circuits.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor key start to ensure no power is running to the PTO circuits.

  2. Access the Switch

Locate the rear PTO switch mounted on the rear fender.

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If your diagnostic checks revealed rodent damage or pushed-back pins, repair the damaged wire harness sections or re-seat the connector pins.

  4. Replace the Switch

If the wiring, pins, and fuses are all in good condition but the incorrect voltage fault persists, the switch itself has likely failed internally. Remove the faulty switch from the fender housing and plug in the replacement OEM switch.

  5. Clear Codes

Use the appropriate Case IH diagnostic tool or the instrument cluster's H-Menu to clear the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code). Do not simply clear the code without fixing the root cause.
