Issue description

This code indicates a critical electrical fault during the startup and initialization phase of the Power Control Unit (PCU). The system has detected that the initialization circuit or its associated communication line is receiving a voltage higher than expected (shorted to a high source, typically 12V battery voltage or a 5V reference line).

Check the cause

  1. Check the battery and charging system to ensure the alternator is not overcharging and causing a voltage spike

  2. Visually inspect the main wiring harness leading to the PCU for chafed wire insulation, pinch points (especially where the harness routes near the cab mounts or transmission housing), or melted wires

  3. Inspect the PCU connectors and pins for water ingress, green corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge a power circuit to a logic circuit

  4. With the battery disconnected, test the specific initialization/CAN pins on the harness side for continuity to the main power pins

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts during testing.

  2. Locate the PCU

    Access the Power Control Unit (location varies by model, but it is typically located inside the right-hand cab console or behind the seat).

  3. Isolate the Short

    Unplug the PCU connectors. Using a digital multimeter, check the voltage on the initialization circuit wire (key on, engine off). If it reads 12V (or 5V depending on the specific logic circuit) when it shouldn't, the short is in the wiring harness.

  4. Repair the Harness

    If a short is found in the harness, trace the wire back through the loom, locate the damaged section, splice in new wire using weather-sealed connectors, and re-wrap the loom.

  5. Test the PCU

    If the harness tests perfectly fine (no shorts to power), the internal circuitry of the PCU has likely failed and shorted internally. The PCU will need to be replaced.

  6. Reassembly and Calibration

    Install the new PCU (if required) and reconnect the battery.

  7. Clear Codes

    Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's onboard H-Menu (diagnostic mode) to clear the T3B code. Cycle the key to ensure the code does not return. Note: A new PCU will require a full transmission and clutch calibration procedure before the tractor can be operated.
