P3D

Case IH P3D – Transmission Controller (TCU) or EDC (Electronic Draft Control): Solenoid Valve, Data Incorrect

Issue description

The controller is receiving implausible, erratic, or incorrect data regarding the state, position, or electrical feedback of a transmission proportional/PWM solenoid valve.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Accompanying Voltage Codes: Look for related codes that indicate a wiring issue rather than a failed valve. For example, Error Code 31 (Under 8 volts) or Error Code 32 (Over 36/45 volts).

  2. Check for Mechanical Binding: Look for Error Code 81 or 82, which indicates the valve spool cannot be returned to neutral or is mechanically stuck.

  3. Inspect the Harness: Check the wiring harness and connectors going to the transmission side-cover valve block for corrosion, shorts to ground, or open circuits.

  4. Verify Sensor Inputs: Ensure the transmission oil temperature sensor and engine coolant sensor are reading correctly, as implausible temperature data can suspend transmission shifting.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the transmission control valve block

Usually on the right-hand side of the transmission housing.

  2. Identify the specific faulty PWM solenoid

Use a multimeter to check for out-of-spec resistance.

  3. Extract the faulty solenoid valve

Relieve hydraulic pressure, remove the retaining bolt/bracket, and extract the faulty solenoid valve.

  4. Install the new solenoid valve

Install the new solenoid valve and reconnect the wiring harness.

  5. Recalibrate the transmission

Place all shift levers in neutral and lower all equipment to the ground. Block the wheels, front and rear. Hold the High and Low range buttons and start the engine. Wait for ''CAL'' to appear in the transmission display, then release the High and Low range buttons. Set the engine speed to 1200 ERPM +/- 100. Follow the on-screen prompts to cycle through the clutch pack calibrations.
