Case IH P40 – Digital Instrument Cluster (DIC) or Tractor Electronic Management Unit / Electronic PTO Controller: PTO relay coil short to +12V or open circuit
Issue description
The control system has detected an electrical fault in the Power Take-Off (PTO) relay circuit. The circuit is either broken/disconnected (open circuit) or the power feed is improperly grounding/shorting directly to a 12-volt source, preventing the PTO from engaging safely.

Check the cause
Check the large 48-pin round connectors under the cab floor mat and floor plate for loose pins, pushed-out wires, or corrosion (especially if the engine cranks but will not start)
Inspect the main power stub coming through the firewall in the engine bay for tight, corrosion-free connections
Test the PTO relay base leg contacts with a multimeter for 12V presence when the PTO switch is activated and check the ground circuit for continuity
Inspect the cab fuse/relay panel for any blown fuses related to the PTO controller or instrument cluster
Repair steps
Disconnect Battery
Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing tractor electrical components.
Repair Harness/Connectors
If loose pins were found in the 48-pin round connectors under the floor plate, re-pin the connector, clean any corrosion with contact cleaner, and ensure the connector halves are securely locked together.
Replace the Relay
Locate the PTO relay module in the fuse/relay panel. If the wiring tests good but the code persists, remove the faulty PTO relay and install a replacement.
Reassemble
Reinstall the floor plate and floor mat, and reconnect the battery.
Configure the PTO Controller
If a new PTO controller/relay module is installed, it must be calibrated to the tractor: With the key and PTO off, install the configuration jumper. Start the engine and set the RPMs to 1000 (± 50). Move the PTO switch to the RUN position. The PTO lamp will stop flashing and stay solid. The controller will automatically begin engagement to calculate engine versus PTO speed. When complete, the PTO will stop, and the lamp will flash 4 rapid flashes followed by a short pause. Turn the PTO off, then shut off the engine.
