Case IH P4D – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Coolant Temperature Sensor, Data Valid But Above Normal Range

Issue description

The sensor is functioning and sending a valid electrical signal to the controller, but the temperature reading itself has exceeded the normal operating threshold. This points to either a genuine engine overheating condition or a skewed/failing sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Verify actual temperature: Confirm if the engine is genuinely overheating by checking for boiling coolant or using an infrared thermometer on the thermostat housing to verify the actual temperature against the sensor's reading.

  2. Check coolant levels: Inspect the radiator and coolant recovery tank. Low coolant is a primary cause of above-normal temperature readings.

  3. Inspect the cooling system: Check the radiator for blockages (chaff, dirt, or debris) and ensure the cooling fan is operating correctly.

  4. Wiring and connector inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and the 2-pin connector at the coolant temperature sensor. Look for corrosion, frayed wires, or loose connections that could cause high resistance and skew the data.

  5. Compare sensor data: If you have a diagnostic tool, compare the engine coolant temperature reading with the transmission oil temperature.

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the engine and coolant to cool down completely to prevent severe burns.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the coolant temperature sensor, typically threaded into the engine block or thermostat housing.

  3. Disconnect

    Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Prepare for Spillage

    Place a drain pan under the sensor area to catch any escaping coolant.

  5. Remove the Sensor

    Use a deep socket or wrench to unscrew and remove the faulty sensor.

  6. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new coolant temperature sensor into place. (If the new sensor does not have pre-applied thread sealant, apply a liquid thread sealant or Teflon tape). Tighten to the manufacturer's torque specifications.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor.

  8. Refill Coolant

    Top off the engine coolant to the proper level in the radiator/reservoir.

  9. Test

    Start the engine, check the sensor area for leaks, and verify that the T4D fault code has cleared from the instrument cluster.
