Case IH P4E – Engine Controller (EDC - Electronic Diesel Control): Coolant Temperature Sensor (PHY), Data Valid But Above Normal Range

Issue description

The engine's control system is receiving a signal from the coolant temperature sensor that is electrically sound (not an open circuit or a short to ground/power), but the temperature value being reported is higher than the maximum safe operating threshold. This means the system believes the engine is overheating, which can be caused by a genuine mechanical overheating event or a sensor whose internal resistance has drifted out of calibration.

Check the cause

  1. Verify actual engine temperature using a laser/infrared thermometer on the thermostat housing or engine block to confirm if the engine is genuinely running hot (mechanical issue) or if the sensor is failing.

  2. Check coolant levels in the header tank and inspect for leaks around hoses, the radiator, and the water pump seal.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and the 2-pin connector at the sensor for corrosion, moisture, or chafing that could alter circuit resistance.

  4. Test the sensor's resistance across the pins with a multimeter and compare the reading against OEM specifications for the current ambient/engine temperature.

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

    Turn off the tractor and allow the engine to cool completely to prevent severe burns from pressurized hot coolant.

  2. Drain Coolant

    Drain a small amount of coolant from the radiator petcock so that the fluid level drops below the sensor's mounting port on the engine block/thermostat housing.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical wiring harness from the coolant temperature sensor.

  4. Remove

    Using a wrench, carefully unscrew the old brass sensor from the housing.

  5. Install

    Thread the new sensor into the port (apply a liquid thread sealant if the new sensor does not come with pre-applied sealant) and tighten to OEM torque specifications.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the 2-pin electrical connector back into the new sensor.

  7. Refill

    Refill the cooling system with the correct specification of coolant to the proper level in the header tank.

  8. Test and Clear

    Start the engine and monitor the temperature gauge. The fault code may clear automatically, or it may need to be cleared manually via the tractor's instrumentation H-Menu or a diagnostic tool.
