P5

Case IH P5 – Electronic Engine Controller (ECU) or PTO/Hand Throttle Controller (XCM): CAN AE Message (Torque Set point), Data Valid But Below Normal Range

Issue description

The control module is successfully receiving the torque setpoint data message (the data is valid and not corrupted), but the actual torque value being reported is falling below the acceptable minimum operating threshold programmed into the system.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM Series
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190

Check the cause

  1. Verify the code on the Electronic Instrument Cluster (EIC) to ensure it is an active 't5' code

  2. Test the CAN bus communication lines between the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the transmission/vehicle control module for proper voltage and continuity

  3. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harnesses for any signs of high resistance, shorts to ground, or open circuits

  4. Verify the calibration status of the engine torque/RPM sensor and the PTO twist sensor, as an uncalibrated sensor can send out-of-range data

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the battery to ensure safety before inspecting the electrical system.

  2. Inspect the Harness

Locate the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the ECU and the instrument cluster/XCM. Inspect the wiring for any physical damage, chafing, or corrosion.

  3. Clean Connections

Disconnect the harness at the ECU and XCM. Clean all connector pins with electrical contact cleaner and ensure they are seated tightly.

  4. Test and Clear

Reconnect the battery and clear the fault codes. Run the tractor to see if the code returns.

  5. Recalibrate

If the wiring is intact and the code persists, perform a software recalibration of the engine torque/RPM sensor or PTO twist sensor using the OEM service tool.

  6. Replace Components

If recalibration fails and the wiring is verified good, the fault lies within the module itself. Replace the faulty ECU or XCM module.
