Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness, sensor shielding, signal wires, and ground for chafing, corrosion, or loose connections.

  2. Check the gap between the sensor tip and the flywheel teeth to ensure it is within factory specification (typically 0.5mm to 2.0mm depending on the engine block).

  3. Remove the sensor and inspect the magnetic pickup tip for built-up metallic debris, moisture ingress, or physical damage.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

    The crankshaft speed sensor is mounted on the side of the engine block, directly reading the flywheel ring gear.

  2. Disconnect Battery

    Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing ECU sensors.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical pigtail. Remove the retaining hardware (on MXM models, this is typically a single M6 x 14mm hex socket screw). Pull the sensor straight out of the block.

  4. Clean the Port

    Thoroughly clean the mounting surface on the engine block to ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flat. A misaligned sensor will cause an incorrect air gap.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Insert the new sensor, verify the air gap if your specific engine model requires manual shimming, and tighten the M6 retaining screw.

  6. Reconnect and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the wiring harness and battery. Clear the fault codes from the instrument cluster.

  7. Recalibrate (If Necessary)

    If the transmission was shifting poorly due to the sensor failure, you may need to perform a Transmission/EDC Calibration (bringing engine speed to 1200 ERPM during the procedure).
