Case IH P58 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Transmission/EDC (Electronic Draft Control) Controller: Crankshaft Speed Sensor, Data Incorrect

The control module is receiving an erratic, implausible, or missing signal from the crankshaft speed sensor (also known as the engine speed sensor). When the data is incorrect, the engine computer cannot accurately time the fuel injection process, which can lead to rough running, hesitation, poor fuel economy, or failure to start.

   Check for related codes (e.g., T59 or T5A) that might indicate a wiring issue rather than a failed sensor.

   Inspect the 3-wire pigtail and main harness connector at the sensor for corrosion, moisture ingress, or physical damage.

   Check the gap between the sensor tip and the flywheel teeth to ensure it is within factory specification (typically 0.5mm to 2.0mm).

   Clear the fault codes using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or H-Menu to see if the code returns upon cranking.

   Locate the Sensor

   The crankshaft speed sensor is typically mounted on the side of the engine block, near the flywheel housing.

   Disconnect Battery

   Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before working on engine electronics.

   Remove the Sensor

   Unplug the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor to the block.

   Clean the Port

   Carefully pull the old sensor out. Clean the mounting surface and the bore to ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flat.

   Install the New Sensor

   Insert the new sensor. If it is an adjustable type, set the air gap to the flywheel teeth using a feeler gauge. If it is a fixed magnetic pickup, simply tighten the mounting bolt to the specified torque.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back in and reconnect the battery.

   Calibrate / Clear Codes

   Turn the key switch on. Use the EST or the tractor's H-Menu to clear the T58 fault code. On models like the MXM, you may need to perform a transmission/EDC calibration after replacing speed sensors to ensure shift quality is restored.
