Case IH P5A – Transmission/EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) or EMU (Electronic Management Unit): Crankshaft Speed Sensor, Shorted To High Source

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the crankshaft speed sensor circuit that is higher than the expected normal operating range, typically indicating that the sensor's signal wire is shorted to a power source (like battery voltage) or the sensor has failed internally.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the crankshaft speed sensor for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to a high-voltage source (battery power).

   Check the sensor connector for moisture, corrosion, or damaged pins.

   Verify the gap between the sensor tip and the flywheel teeth is within the factory specification (usually 0.5mm to 2.0mm).

   Locate the Sensor

   Find the crankshaft speed sensor. It is typically mounted on the side of the engine block near the flywheel, or at the left rear of the timing gear housing.

   Disconnect and Remove

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor. Remove the retaining fastener (often a single M6 hex socket screw).

   Clean the Mounting Area

   Thoroughly clean the mounting surface on the block to ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flat.

   Install the New Sensor

   Insert the new sensor. If your engine requires manual gapping, verify the 0.5-2mm gap between the sensor tip and the flywheel teeth. Secure the retaining screw.

   Reconnect and Clear

   Reconnect the weather-sealed electrical harness. Turn the key on and use the tractor's diagnostic menu or an electronic service tool to clear the T5A fault code.

   Calibration (If Necessary)

   Because this sensor affects the Transmission/EDC, you may need to perform a transmission/clutch calibration procedure after replacing the sensor and clearing the code to ensure smooth shifting.
