Case IH P72 – PCU (Powertrain Control Unit) / ECM (Engine Control Module): Engine Overspeed, Data Valid But Below Normal Range

The engine has exceeded its programmed overspeed limit. The data received by the controller is considered valid (the sensor is functioning and sending a signal) but the reading falls outside the normal expected operational range for that specific condition.

   Verify if the vehicle was being overloaded while traveling downhill.

   Check for brake failure.

   Check for faulty secondary controller (CFPS) software.

   Inspect the fuel injection pump for faults.

   Test 1: Check the Crankshaft Speed Sensor by turning keystart OFF, disconnecting C287, and measuring resistance between Pin 1 and Pin 2 (should be 880-920 Ohms), and between pins and ground.

   Test 2: Check for a Short to Positive (+Ve) Voltage by disconnecting ECM C316, turning keystart ON, and measuring voltage between C287 pins and ground while wiggling the harness.

   Power off machine

   Power OFF the machine and turn the keystart OFF. Disconnect the battery ground cable if replacing the ECM/PCU.

   Locate sensor

   Locate the crankshaft speed sensor on the engine block (near the flywheel/damper).

   Disconnect sensor

   Disconnect the sensor's electrical connector (C287).

   Remove retaining screw

   Remove the retaining screw (typically an M6 x 14mm hex socket screw) holding the sensor in place.

   Replace sensor

   Remove the old sensor and install the new Crankshaft Speed Sensor.

   Reinstall components

   Reinstall the retaining screw and reconnect the wiring harness.

   Repair wiring harness

   If the wiring harness was found to be shorted during diagnostics, trace the harness routing, open the outer covering, and repair the shorted wires using a harness repair kit, or replace the affected harness section.

   Replace ECM/PCU

   If the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCU) was diagnosed as faulty, remove the module from its mounting bracket and install a replacement unit.

   Clear codes and test

   Reconnect the battery, turn the keystart ON, and clear the fault codes using a service tool. Run the engine to verify the T72 code does not return.
