Case IH P73 – PCU (Powertrain Control Unit) or Engine ECU (Engine Controller): Engine Overspeed, Data Valid But Above Normal Range

This fault code indicates an "Engine Overspeed, Data Valid But Above Normal Range" condition. It is triggered when the engine speed exceeds the programmed overspeed limit. When this occurs, the engine remains enabled with no restriction on fuel or speed, but the system logs the event to protect against excessive torque and overheating.

   Determine if the vehicle was overloaded while traveling downhill, which can mechanically force the engine to overspeed

   Inspect for brake failure, which can lead to runaway conditions on inclines

   Verify if there is faulty secondary controller (CFPS) software. Check with a dealer for available software updates

   Inspect the fuel injection pump for faults or mechanical sticking that could cause uncontrolled fueling

   Power off the machine, disconnect the relevant ECU/PCU connectors, and use a multimeter to measure circuit resistance. Check for shorts to ground, open circuits, or corroded pins that might send false speed signals to the controller

   Address the Root Cause

   Depending on the diagnostic results, the repair may simply be operator education (avoiding overloading downhill), repairing the mechanical brakes, updating the CFPS software, or replacing a faulty fuel injection pump.

   If a wiring fault is found, use an OEM harness repair kit to replace damaged pins or sections of the harness.

   Clear the Code

   Once the mechanical, software, or operational cause of the error code has been rectified, connect the diagnostic service tool and clear the error code from the PCU/ECU memory.
