P76

Case IH P76 – ECU: Control Duration, Data Valid But Above Normal Range

Issue description

Fault code T76 (often misread or mistyped as P76) indicates that the fuel injection pump's control duration is exceeding the normal mapped parameters. While the data received by the computer is valid, the duration the fuel solenoid valve is energized is too long. This typically occurs when the engine is starving for fuel; the system attempts to compensate for low fuel pressure or volume by commanding the injection pump to stay open longer to maintain engine RPM and rail pressure.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM120
  • MXM130
  • MXM140
  • MXM155
  • MXM175
  • MXM190

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active fault codes related to fuel pressure, pump timing, or engine speed, which can help isolate the root cause.

  2. Inspect the fuel supply for restrictions. Check for pinched fuel lines, a failing lift pump, or heavily clogged fuel filters.

  3. Perform electrical testing with the key switch OFF. Disconnect the connectors at both ends of the PCU and injection pump circuits. Use a multimeter to measure circuit resistance and check for corroded pins, shorts to ground, or open wires.

Repair steps

  1. Power down and disconnect battery

Power down the tractor, turn the key switch OFF, and disconnect the battery to protect the electronic control modules.

  2. Drain water separators

Locate the primary and secondary fuel filters/water separators. Drain any water from the separator bowls.

  3. Replace fuel filters

Remove and replace the fuel filters, as severe fuel restriction is the primary mechanical trigger for extended control duration.

  4. Inspect and clean wiring

Inspect the wiring harness connecting the PCU to the fuel injection pump. Clean the connector pins with electrical contact cleaner and ensure they are seated tightly.

  5. Bleed fuel system

Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and bleed the fuel system to ensure no air is trapped in the lines.

  6. Clear fault codes

Start the engine and clear the fault codes using the tractor's H-Menu diagnostic display or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  7. Test run and verify

Test run the tractor under load. If code T76 returns, the fuel injection pump or the PCU itself may have internal mechanical wear and will require professional bench calibration or replacement.
