P7E

Case IH P7E – PCU: Crankshaft signal in PCU, data valid but below normal range

Issue description

The control unit is receiving a signal from the crankshaft position sensor that is recognizable (valid data) but the voltage, frequency, or amplitude is falling below the expected normal operating threshold. Note: P7E is a common misreading of the fault code T7E (3628-1).

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the crankshaft position sensor and the PCU for chafing, defective wires, or external electromagnetic disturbances

  2. Check sensor mounting and air gap; a loose sensor or excessive distance from the trigger wheel will cause a weak signal

  3. Test the sensor's internal resistance using a multimeter (a healthy OEM sensor should read approximately 820 Ohms)

  4. Ensure the machined trigger wheel on the crankshaft is free of debris, mud, or damage

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the crankshaft position sensor on the engine block (typically positioned near the crankshaft pulley or flywheel reading the trigger wheel).

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove

Remove the retaining bolt securing the sensor to the block and carefully pull the sensor out of its bore.

  5. Clean

Wipe the mounting surface and bore clean to ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flat (preventing air gap issues).

  6. Install

Insert the new crankshaft position sensor and tighten the retaining bolt to OEM torque specifications.

  7. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place.

  8. Test

Reconnect the battery, clear the stored T7E fault code from the PCU, and run the engine to verify the signal is restored to the normal range.
