P81

Case IH P81 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Power Control Unit (PCU) / Electronic Management Unit (EMU): Pump Map, Data Valid But Above Normal Range

Issue description

This code indicates that the stored calibration values (the "pump map") for the transmission clutches or hydraulic pump are outside the acceptable upper limit. It is typically caused by a failed calibration attempt, corrupted non-volatile memory (RAM) in the controller, or excessive mechanical wear in the clutch packs forcing the calibration values out of bounds.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190

Check the cause

  1. Check for related codes like T84 or T85 ('RAM in PCU, data valid but below/above normal range'), which indicate the controller's memory is corrupted and the PCU itself may need replacement.

  2. Ensure the transmission oil temperature is within the specified calibration range (typically 20°C–50°C for 24x12 transmissions, or 60°C–105°C for larger powershift models).

  3. Ensure the parking brake is applied, the A/C is switched off, and all electrical and hydraulic services are deselected.

Repair steps

  1. Position the Tractor

Park the tractor on level ground in an open area, away from obstacles. Block the wheels (front and rear) to prevent unexpected movement.

  2. Enter Calibration Mode

With the engine off, press and hold the High and Low range buttons on the transmission control. Start the engine while holding the buttons.

  3. Initiate Calibration

Release the buttons when "CAL" appears on the transmission display.

  4. Set Engine RPM

Use the hand throttle to set the engine speed to exactly 1200 RPM (± 100 RPM).

  5. Calibrate Clutches

Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the clutches. The display will show a number that increases as the controller learns the new clutch fill times.

  6. Save and Exit

When the display reads "END", the calibration is complete. Turn the key switch to the "OFF" position to save the new pump map values to the PCU's non-volatile memory.

  7. Test

Restart the tractor. If the T81 code returns immediately, or if the calibration fails to complete, the Transmission Control Unit (PCU) is likely faulty or there is severe internal mechanical wear in the transmission requiring a teardown.

Parts you might need
