P89

Case IH P89 – Transmission Controller / Electronic Management Unit (EMU): Solenoid Valve Power Stage 2, Data Valid But Above Normal Range

Issue description

This code indicates an electrical anomaly in the transmission's proportional (PWM) solenoid valve circuit. "Above normal range" typically means the controller is detecting higher-than-expected resistance or voltage on the circuit. This is usually caused by corroded/dirty connector terminals, a failing solenoid coil, or a short to a high-voltage source.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM120
  • MXM130
  • MXM140
  • MXM155
  • MXM175
  • MXM190
  • TM115
  • TM165

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness and the specific solenoid connector for dirt, moisture, or corroded pins.

  2. Perform a resistance test on the solenoid circuit using a multimeter. Normal range is 3 to 4 ohms. A reading higher than 4 ohms indicates dirty or corroded terminals. A reading of 100K ohms (or infinite/OL) indicates a completely open circuit or a broken wire.

  3. Perform a voltage check to ensure the circuit is not shorted to a high-voltage source.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on level ground, lower all equipment, place shift levers in neutral, block the wheels, and turn the key switch to the OFF position.

  2. Removal

Locate the Power Stage 2 transmission solenoid on the transmission control valve block. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining hardware/plugs and carefully extract the faulty solenoid valve.

  3. Installation

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  4. Mandatory Calibration

Perform the Transmission/EDC Calibration Set Up Procedure (specifically the H1 Clutch and Synchroniser Calibration). Start the engine and set engine speed to 1200 ERPM. Enter calibration mode (the display will show 'CAL') to allow the transmission controller to learn the fill times and electrical characteristics of the new solenoid.
