Case IH P8A – Engine ECU or Pump Control Unit (PCU): Shut-Off Signal, Data Valid But Below Normal Range
Issue description
The control unit is detecting that the electrical signal (voltage or resistance) to the fuel shut-off solenoid has dropped below the expected normal operating threshold. This typically points to high resistance in the wiring, a poor electrical connection, or a failing solenoid coil that is preventing the valve from operating correctly.

Check the cause
Power Down: Turn the Keyswitch OFF and Power OFF. Disconnect the battery to prevent false readings or accidental shorts.
Isolate the Circuit: Disconnect the wiring harness connectors at both ends (at the PCU/ECU and at the fuel shut-off solenoid on the injection pump).
Measure Resistance: Set a multimeter to measure Ohms. Probe the connector pins (avoiding contact with the metal case) to measure the circuit resistance of the harness.
Check for Damage: Look for high resistance (which indicates a bad connection or corroded wire) or a short to ground. Inspect the connector pins for pushed-out terminals or moisture intrusion.
Test the Solenoid: Measure the resistance across the fuel shut-off solenoid terminals to determine if the internal coil has failed (open or shorted).
Repair steps
Locate damaged wiring
If the diagnostic checks point to a wiring failure, locate the damaged section of the wiring harness.
Repair damaged wire
Cut away the damaged wire. Strip the ends and twist/solder new bare leads together for each damaged wire.
Seal wiring repair
Apply a non-hardening silicone rubber compound over the repaired section to seal it from moisture.
Tape wiring repair
Wrap the repaired area tightly with vinyl electrical insulation tape, ensuring an overlap of at least 2 inches (50 mm) at each end of the repair.
Clean injection pump area
If the diagnostic checks point to a failed Fuel Shut-Off Solenoid, clean the area around the fuel injection pump to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.
Disconnect solenoid
Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid.
Remove old solenoid
Unthread or unbolt the old solenoid from the injection pump housing.
Install new solenoid
Install the new solenoid, ensuring the O-ring/seal is properly seated and the correct thread pitch is aligned. (Note: Some MX models require updated mounting bolts during this step).
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the electrical harness and ensure it is tight.
Prime fuel system
Bump the starter to run the supply pump for about 30 seconds to prime the system and remove air before fully starting the tractor.
