P8E

Case IH P8E – Powertrain Control Unit (PCU) / Engine Control Module: Fuel Injection Pump Temperature, Data Valid But Below Normal Range

Issue description

The temperature sensor located on the fuel injection pump is successfully communicating with the system (the data is valid and not shorted/open), but the temperature reading it is sending is lower than the expected normal operating parameters.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190

Check the cause

  1. Check for related codes (such as T8F or T90) which could point to an intermittent wiring issue rather than a strictly mechanical temperature issue.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the fuel injection pump temperature sensor for physical damage, corrosion, or loose pins.

  3. Ensure the tractor is actually reaching normal operating temperature to rule out a stuck-open thermostat or extreme ambient conditions.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

Identify the fuel injection pump temperature sensor on the fuel injection pump assembly.

  2. Inspect the Connection

Disconnect the sensor harness. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and ensure the pins are tight and free of moisture or corrosion.

  3. Test the Sensor

Using a multimeter, measure the resistance (ohms) across the sensor terminals. Compare this reading to the OEM specification for the current ambient temperature.

  4. Test the Harness

If the sensor tests within spec, check the continuity of the wiring harness from the sensor connector back to the PCU to rule out high resistance in the wires.

  5. Replace if Faulty

If the sensor's resistance is out of specification (reading artificially cold), replace the sensor.

  6. Clear and Calibrate

Clear the fault codes from the PCU. Run the tractor up to standard operating temperature (between 20°C and 50°C as noted in MXM calibration guides) to verify the code does not return.
