Case IH P97 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Monitoring Module, Data Valid But Above Normal Range
Issue description
This code indicates a communication or internal monitoring failure between the tractor's Engine Control Module (ECM) and the Pump Control Unit (PCU) mounted on the fuel injection pump. As a safety measure, the engine enters a limp-home condition, restricting fuel supply and limiting maximum engine speed to 1300 RPM.

Check the cause
Check system voltage with the engine running at 2000 RPM to ensure the alternator is not overcharging (greater than 15 Volts)
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the main Engine Control Module and the injection pump's PCU for chafed wires, corrosion, or pins shorting to a high-voltage source
Perform a power cycle reset by turning the keystart OFF, waiting at least 30 seconds for the ECU to power down completely, and turning it back ON to check for an intermittent glitch
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn the key OFF and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Resolve Voltage Issues
If step 1 of the diagnostics revealed an overcharging alternator (15V+), replace the alternator/voltage regulator before addressing the injection pump.
Clean and Re-seat Connectors
Disconnect the main plug at the Bosch VP44 injection pump. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, ensure no pins are pushed back, and securely reconnect it.
Test Run
Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and clear the fault codes using the electronic service tool or the tractor's H-Menu diagnostic mode.
Replace the Injection Pump
If the wiring and system voltage are good but the t97 code immediately returns and the tractor remains locked in limp mode (1300 RPM limit), the internal PCU on the injection pump has failed. Remove and replace the entire Bosch VP44 injection pump assembly (or send to a certified Bosch diesel shop for a rebuild).
Bleed the Fuel System
After installing the new injection pump, bleed the high-pressure fuel lines before attempting to start the tractor.
Parts you might need
(3)Electronic Fuel Injection Pump with PCU (Bosch VP44)
Must be sourced via Case IH/CNH or a certified Bosch diesel distributor.
Alternator Assembly
Only if the diagnostic phase proves the system is overcharging and frying the module data.
Engine Wiring Harness
Only if physical shorts/breaks are found between the ECU and the pump.
