Case IH PAA – PCU: PCU CAN Chip, Data Valid But Above Normal Range
Issue description
Communication anomaly on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The CAN transceiver chip inside the control unit is receiving or transmitting data that is formatted correctly (valid), but the electrical values or data parameters are exceeding the normal operating threshold. This is typically caused by voltage spikes, a short to a high-voltage source on the CAN lines, or an internal failure of the CAN chip itself. Note: The code is actually tAA (Sub-code 3012-0) but is frequently misread as PAA on digital 7-segment displays.

Check the cause
Test the battery and alternator output for overcharging, which can cause voltage spikes across the CAN network
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the PCU to other modules for chafed wires shorting CAN High or CAN Low to a 12V power source
Inspect the main wiring harness connectors at the PCU for moisture, corrosion, or loose/backed-out pins
With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (should read approximately 60 ohms to verify terminating resistors)
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical damage during the repair.
Locate the PCU
Access the Powertrain Control Unit (typically located inside the cab, under the right-hand console or behind the seat, depending on the exact cab configuration).
Clean and Reseat
Disconnect the wiring harnesses from the PCU. Clean the pins with electronic contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and firmly reseat the connectors.
Test the Network
Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position. If the tAA code clears, the issue was a poor connection.
Replace the PCU
If the wiring tests perfectly and the tAA code returns immediately, the internal CAN chip on the PCU has permanently failed. The PCU must be replaced.
Calibrate the New Module
Once installed, you must enter the tractor's 'H-Menu' to perform the Transmission/EDC Calibration Set Up Procedures. Specifically, you must run the H1 Clutch and Synchroniser Calibration. This involves warming the transmission oil, setting engine speed to 1200 RPM, and using the High/Low range buttons to let the PCU learn the clutch fill times.
