PB5

Case IH PB5 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): CAN VE Message (Speed Set point), Data Incorrect

Issue description

This code indicates a communication error on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the engine speed setpoint data being transmitted from the tractor's central controller to the engine controller is incorrect, corrupted, or implausible. When this code is active, the engine is usually still enabled, but the system will restrict the maximum engine speed (typically limp mode limits it to around 1760 RPM) as a safety precaution.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • Case IH MXM 120
  • Case IH MXM 130
  • Case IH MXM 140
  • Case IH MXM 155
  • Case IH MXM 175
  • Case IH MXM 190
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Check the wiring harness and connectors between the XCM (usually located under the EDC panel or right-hand console) and the Engine ECM. Look for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture in the connectors.

  2. CAN Bus Resistance Test: Disconnect battery power and measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, a terminating resistor or wire is broken. If it reads near 0 ohms, the CAN lines are shorted together.

  3. Continuity Test: Check for continuity (less than 3-4 ohms) on the specific wires carrying the VE message between the XCM and ECM.

  4. Live Data Monitoring: Use a diagnostic tool (such as the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or Jaltest) to monitor the 'Speed Setpoint' live data. See if the XCM is outputting erratic values before the ECM flags them as incorrect.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  2. Clean Connectors

Disconnect the harnesses at both the XCM and the ECM. Use a high-quality electrical contact cleaner to clean the pins. Apply dielectric grease and reconnect.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the continuity or resistance tests failed, locate the break or short in the CAN wiring harness. Splice and solder the damaged wires, sealing them with heat-shrink tubing.

  4. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, clear the stored fault codes using your diagnostic tool, and run the tractor.

  5. Software Flash / Module Replacement

If the wiring is perfectly intact and the code returns immediately, the XCM is likely outputting corrupted data (or the ECM is failing to process it). A dealer may need to reflash the XCM firmware. If hardware failure is confirmed, replace the faulty module.
