Case IH PC2 – Transmission Control Module (TCM): PTO Twist Sensor Open Circuit

Issue description

The controller has detected an "Open Circuit" in the PTO twist sensor (also known as the PTO torque/speed sensor) circuit. This means the control module is not detecting a continuous electrical path to or from the sensor. This is typically caused by a broken wire in the harness, a disconnected or corroded plug, or a complete failure of the sensor's internal electrical coil.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the PTO twist sensor (located on the rear PTO housing/transmission). Look for severed wires, rubbed-through insulation, or a disconnected plug.

  2. Connector Pin Check: Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or push-out (where a pin is pushed back into the connector housing and fails to make contact).

  3. Sensor Continuity Test: Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins on the sensor itself. If the multimeter reads "OL" (Open Line) or infinite resistance, the sensor has failed internally and must be replaced.

  4. Harness Continuity Test: If the sensor tests good, check the wiring harness from the sensor connector back to the Transmission Controller for continuity to rule out a broken wire in the chassis harness.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the tractor, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery ground cable.

  2. Locate the PTO twist sensor on the PTO housing/transmission assembly.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Clean the area around the sensor base thoroughly to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the transmission housing.

  5. Unbolt and remove the faulty PTO twist sensor.

  6. Install the new sensor and tighten the mounting hardware to OEM torque specifications.

  7. Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks securely into place.

  8. Reconnect the battery ground cable.

  9. Crucial Step - Calibration: You must perform a PTO Twist Sensor Calibration via the tractor's H-Menu or electronic service tool.

    Failure to do so will immediately trigger a secondary fault code (such as TC6, U50, or 3123: "PTO Twist Sensor Not Calibrated").

  10. Clear the inactive fault codes and test PTO operation.
