Case IH PC3 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Drivetrain/Transmission Controller (DEC): PTO Twist Sensor Short To Ground

The control module detects that the voltage on the PTO twist sensor's signal circuit has dropped to 0V (or below the minimum valid threshold). This indicates the signal wire has rubbed bare and is touching the tractor's metal chassis, or the sensor itself has failed internally and is shorting the reference voltage to the ground circuit. Note: PC3 typically refers to a hydraulic control valve block function ('Priority to swing') on excavators like the CX225SR, while the actual Case IH fault codes for the PTO Twist Sensor Short To Ground are 3122 or U59.

   Locate the PTO twist sensor on the transmission output housing leading to the PTO

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the sensor for pinched wires, rubbed insulation, or areas shorting against the transmission casing

   Disconnect the 3-pin connector at the sensor and check for water intrusion, dirt, or corroded pins bridging the terminals

   With the sensor disconnected, use a multimeter to measure resistance between the signal wire in the harness and a known good chassis ground. Continuity indicates a harness short; infinite resistance indicates an internal sensor short

   Resolve the Short

   If the harness is damaged, splice and repair the affected wire, then wrap it in protective loom. If the harness is good, remove the retaining bolt for the PTO twist sensor and pull the faulty sensor from the housing. Install the replacement sensor.

   Reconnect

   Plug the 3-pin connector back into the sensor.

   Clear Codes

   Turn the key switch to the ON position and use the electronic service tool or the tractor's diagnostic display to clear the active 3122 / U59 fault code.

   Recalibrate the PTO

   Perform the automated PTO calibration procedure via the tractor's H-Menu or service tool to teach the controller the new sensor's baseline zero-load value. This is required to resolve secondary codes (Code 3123 or Code U60) triggered by replacing the sensor or fixing the circuit.
