Case IH PC5 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / PC5 Power Module: Engine Torque/RPM Sensor Short To Ground

The transmission controller has detected a short to ground on the signal circuit for the Engine Torque/RPM sensor. The signal wire's voltage is being pulled down to 0V, resulting in a complete loss of the engine speed and torque data.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine Torque/RPM sensor (located on the flywheel/bell housing) to the transmission controller for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or areas rubbing against the chassis.

   Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals.

   With the sensor disconnected and the key OFF, use a multimeter to check for continuity between the sensor's signal wire (on the harness side) and a known good chassis ground. Continuity indicates a shorted harness.

   If the harness tests good, check the sensor itself for an internal short to its own ground pin.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the Sensor

   Find the Engine Torque/RPM sensor, which is typically mounted on the engine flywheel housing or transmission bell housing.

   Repair Wiring

   If diagnostic tests revealed a short in the harness, trace the wire back to the PC5/Transmission module, locate the damaged section, splice in a new section of wire using weather-sealed connectors, and re-loom the harness.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the harness is intact but the sensor is internally shorted, remove the retaining bolt(s) holding the sensor in place. Pull the old sensor straight out, lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean oil, insert it into the housing, and torque the retaining bolt to OEM spec.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the sensor harness and the battery. Turn the key ON and use the tractor's diagnostic display to clear the inactive F72 fault code.

   Transmission Calibration

   Perform a transmission/EDC calibration procedure (often requiring the tractor to be at operating temperature, parking brake applied, and engine speed set to 1200 RPM) to ensure smooth shifting after the repair.
