Case IH PC9 – Central Controller (XCM) or Power Control Unit (PCU): PTO Twist Speed Sensor Over Voltage
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the PTO twist speed sensor (also referred to as the PTO torque sensor) that is higher than the maximum threshold of its normal operating range. This typically points to a short to a power source, a failed sensor, or an external overvoltage event.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MXM
- Case IH MXM Series (MXM 120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190)
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Magnum Series
Check the cause
Check Power Supply: Verify that the tractor's battery has not been connected to an external power supply (such as a high-voltage jump starter or unregulated battery charger) that could be feeding excessive voltage to the system.
Harness Testing: With the power off and connectors disconnected to prevent false readings, perform a voltage measurement and continuity test on the PTO twist speed sensor harness to check for a short to 12 volts.
Sensor Testing: Perform a resistance test on the sensor itself to determine if it has failed internally.
Controller Check: If the harness and sensor test within normal parameters, the Central Controller (XCM) may be internally shorted or faulty.
Repair steps
Disconnect External Power
If an external charger or jump box is connected, remove it and cycle the key to see if the code clears.
Repair Wiring
If the harness test reveals a short to a 12V power source, locate the chafed wire or melted connector and repair/replace the affected harness section.
Replace Sensor
If the sensor fails the resistance test, remove the faulty PTO twist speed sensor and install a new OEM replacement.
Replace Controller
If all wiring and the sensor are intact, replace the Central Controller (XCM).
Calibrate
After the physical repair is complete and the code is cleared, you must recalibrate the PTO twist sensor (e.g., via the H-Menu/H8 procedure in the MXM series, setting the default calibration value to 3999).
