Case IH PD5 – PCU (Powertrain Control Unit) or Engine ECU: Hand Throttle Position Sensor Difference Error

The control unit monitors and compares voltage signals from the redundant dual-potentiometer system (Potentiometer 1 and Potentiometer 2) for the hand throttle. If the difference between the two signals falls outside the acceptable programmed parameters, the system detects a mismatch and triggers the TD5 error. The engine control unit will typically deactivate the hand throttle input for safety, and the tractor may default to a limp-home mode or restrict throttle operation exclusively to the foot accelerator pedal.

   Visual Inspection: Check the wiring harness and the specific connectors (often labeled "GAS" or "MX1"/"X11" depending on the model) for loose, pushed-back, or corroded pins.

   Voltage Check: Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5V reference voltage (approx. 5 Vdc) and has a solid ground connection.

   Signal Sweep Test: Since the error is caused by a difference between Potentiometer 1 and Potentiometer 2, use a multimeter or diagnostic tool to monitor the voltage of both circuits while slowly moving the hand throttle. Look for erratic readings, drop-offs, or dead spots in either potentiometer's signal.

   Safety First

   Stop the engine, let it cool, and turn off the key to ensure no power is running to the ECU during the procedure.

   Access the Sensor

   Remove the necessary right-hand cab console trim panels to access the base of the hand throttle mechanism.

   Disconnect Wiring

   Unplug the electrical connector from the hand throttle position sensor. Inspect the connector faces for corrosion and clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring tests good but the sensor failed the sweep test, unbolt the faulty hand throttle position sensor (or the entire hand throttle assembly, depending on whether the sensor is integrated on your specific model) and install the replacement part.

   Reassemble and Calibrate

   Reconnect the wiring harness and reinstall the console trim. Turn the key on, clear the stored fault codes, and perform the electronic throttle calibration procedure via the tractor's H-Menu or diagnostic tool to sync the new sensor with the PCU.
