PD7

Case IH PD7 – PCU (Power Control Unit) / Transmission Controller or Engine ECU (EDC): Hand Throttle Idle Switch Closed Circuit

Issue description

The controller detects that the idle switch circuit is continuously closed (usually shorted to ground or shorted to a voltage source) even when the throttle lever is moved away from the idle position.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • Case IH MXM Series (MXM 120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (e.g., 235–340)
  • Case IH Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the hand throttle assembly on the right-hand armrest or side console for physical damage, spilled liquids, or debris that could jam the switch mechanism.

  2. Unplug the hand throttle connector and inspect for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.

  3. Using a digital multimeter, test the idle switch pins on the hand throttle itself. The circuit should show continuity (closed) when the lever is at the idle stop, and it should break continuity (open) as soon as the lever is moved forward. If it remains closed at all times, the switch is internally shorted.

  4. If the switch tests good, check the tractor-side wiring harness between the hand throttle connector and the PCU/ECU. Test for a short to ground or a short to another wire in the harness.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Access the Assembly

Remove the trim panels on the right-hand armrest or side console to expose the hand throttle assembly mounting hardware.

  3. Remove the Faulty Unit

Disconnect the electrical harness from the hand throttle. Unbolt the assembly from the console.

  4. Replace or Repair

If the diagnostic tests proved the switch was internally shorted, install the new hand throttle assembly. If the harness was the issue, locate the chafed or melted wire, splice in a repair section using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors, and re-loom the harness.

  5. Reassembly

Bolt the throttle assembly back into place, reconnect the electrical plug, and reinstall the console trim.

  6. Calibration

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and clear the stored fault codes. Depending on the model (especially MXM/TM series), you may need to enter the H-Menu / Calibration mode to perform a throttle position sensor calibration so the PCU learns the new minimum and maximum voltage values of the replacement throttle.
