Case IH PD8 – PCU (Power Shift Control Unit): PCU Power Supply, Data Valid But Above Normal Range
Issue description
The voltage supplied to the Power Shift Control Unit (PCU) is registering as 'Data Valid But Above Normal Range', meaning the controller is receiving a voltage signal that exceeds the maximum normal operating threshold. This over-voltage condition can cause the transmission to behave erratically, fail to shift, or result in a complete loss of transmission movement to protect the circuitry.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- MXM
- Case IH MXM 120
- Case IH MXM 130
- Case IH MXM 140
- Case IH MXM 155
- Case IH MXM 175
- Case IH MXM 190
- Case IH Maxxum 100-140
- Case IH MXU100-MXU135
Check the cause
Check system voltage to ensure the alternator is not overcharging the system, which would trigger an above normal range voltage code
Inspect PCU power supply and grounds at the main TCU connectors (e.g., Connector A4/3). Verify Pin 13 (GND) for a solid ground connection, and Pins 14 (+30) and 10 for proper voltage levels
Check for open circuits or a damaged battery ground cable that could cause sporadic errors
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical arcing.
Access the PCU
Remove the shift console trim ring and the front cover inside the cab to expose the Power Shift Control Unit.
Remove the Module
Disconnect the PCU harness connectors. Remove the mounting hardware and extract the PCU.
Software Flash (Optional)
If the error is a sporadically occurring software issue rather than a hard hardware failure, attempt to re-flash/reprogram the control unit before outright replacement.
Install New Module
Install the replacement PCU, secure the mounting hardware, and reconnect the harness connectors and battery ground.
Perform Transmission Calibration
Set engine speed to 1200 ERPM. Hold the High and Low range buttons and start the engine. 'CAL' will appear in the transmission display. Follow the display prompts to calibrate the H1 clutch and synchronizers until 'END' is displayed.
