PE2

Case IH PE2 – Central Controller (XCM): Fan rpm out of range

Issue description

This code indicates that the engine cooling fan's speed is operating outside of the expected or commanded parameters. The underlying condition is typically caused by either a false speed signal being sent back to the controller, or the Vistronic (viscous) fan coupling being completely burnt out or mechanically damaged, preventing it from achieving the commanded RPM.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Vistronic fan connector (C275) and the inline harness connector (C001) for corrosion, backed-out pins, or moisture

  2. Test the wiring harness for continuity, shorts to ground, or open circuits between the fan clutch and the XCM central controller

  3. Test the fan default state by unplugging the fan harness directly at the fan. It should default to running at full maximum speed. If it does not speed up, the viscous clutch is mechanically failed or burnt out

  4. Verify that the speed sensor signal coming back from the viscous coupling is reaching the controller

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Wiring Issues

If the diagnostic checks reveal a faulty connector or a break in the harness, repair the wiring or replace the pigtail connector.

  2. Replace the Fan Clutch

If the harness is good but the fan fails the unplug test or has a burnt-out internal sensor, the Vistronic fan clutch assembly must be replaced.

  3. Remove the Old Clutch

Unthread the fan clutch assembly from the water pump pulley (note that some use a large threaded nut, e.g., M30 thread, while others use a 4-bolt or 6-bolt flange depending on the exact model year).

  4. Install the New Clutch

Mount the new viscous fan clutch and transfer the fan blades if they are not included with the new clutch. Torque to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnect

Plug the fan harness back into the main engine harness.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Clear the TE2 / T02 error code from the XCM using the tractor's diagnostic menu or a service tool. Run the tractor and test the system for normal operation to ensure the fan RPM is now reading within range.
