Case IH PE5 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Power Control Unit (PCU): Last element (unknown input)

This is a default or "catch-all" error code. It indicates that the control module has received an electrical signal, voltage value, or CAN bus data packet that falls completely outside of its programmed parameters and cannot be mapped to a known sensor state.

   Check for concurrent codes in the TE family (e.g., TE1, TE2, TE4) using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to identify the specific circuit sending the unrecognized signal

   Inspect the +5V reference circuit for a short to power or ground, which can cause sensors to send unrecognized voltages

   Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission sensors and the Visctronic active fan for chafing, pinched wires, or water ingress in the connectors

   Verify the software version on the PCU/TCU, as unknown input anomalies are frequently resolved by firmware updates

   Connect Diagnostic Tool

   Hook up the CNH EST to the tractor's diagnostic port to read freeze-frame data and identify which specific sensor circuit was active when the TE5 code was thrown.

   Isolate the Circuit

   If the EST points toward the transmission or active fan, disconnect the Visctronic fan clutch and the transmission oil temperature sensor.

   Test for Continuity and Shorts

   Use a multimeter to check the wiring between the disconnected sensor plugs and the PCU/TCU pins. Look for continuity to ground or cross-voltage from another circuit.

   Repair Wiring

   If a wire is chafed (often found where the harness routes near the transmission housing or engine block), repair the wire and apply heat-shrink tubing.

   Replace Faulty Sensor

   If the wiring tests good, the sensor itself may have failed internally, sending an erratic signal. Replace the suspect sensor.

   If no physical electrical fault is found, have a dealer reflash the PCU/TCU with the latest software update to patch the logic error causing the "unknown input."
