Case IH r – Hitch Controller: Loss of 5 volt regulator

Issue description

The internal 5-volt regulator inside the controller has failed or is operating out of range, or the controller is experiencing a severe drop in supply voltage (battery voltage dropping below 9.8 volts).

Applies to these machines

  • MX Maxxum
  • 7200/8900 series Magnum
  • Case IH Magnum 7100 Series
  • Case IH Magnum 7200 Series
  • 7110
  • 7120
  • 7130
  • 7140
  • 7150
  • 7210
  • 7220
  • 7230
  • 7240
  • 7250

Check the cause

  1. Test Battery Voltage: Ensure the tractor battery circuit output is not dropping below 9.8 volts.

  2. Check Power Stud: Inspect the battery and cab power stud located on the cab floor RH (Right Hand) console.

  3. Check Fuses: Verify that Fuse #7 is not blown or defective.

  4. Test Connector Power: Turn the key to the 'ON' position and check pin 14 of the 16-pin connector at the module for power.

  5. Test Connector Ground: Check pin 1 of the 16-pin connector to ensure the control module has a solid ground.

  6. Check Relays (Early Models): For 7200 series tractors below serial number JJA0064978, check if Relay #6 is defective.

Repair steps

  1. Verify Connections

Make sure the controller has a good connection to the battery and is properly grounded based on the diagnostic checks above.

  2. Clear the Code

Turn the key switch to the OFF position, then back to the ON position to clear the fault code.

  3. Evaluate

If the 'r' code is recorded again (or occurs more than once on tractors between SN: JJA0067094 - JJA0068206), the controller's internal 5V regulator has permanently failed.

  4. Replace the Module

Remove the defective Hitch Controller and install the replacement unit.

  5. Recalibrate

The hitch must be recalibrated every time a hitch component (including the controller) is replaced or adjusted. Run the standard hitch calibration procedure for your specific tractor series.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Hitch Controller / Hitch Control Module
