Case IH R15 – EHR (Electronic Hydraulic Remote) Control Unit: Valve 1 Spool Travel Short Or Spool Travel Excessive Or Open Centre Not Reached
Issue description
This code indicates a physical or electronic tracking issue with the spool inside Electronic Hydraulic Remote (EHR) Valve #1. The system detects that the valve spool is either not reaching its commanded position, traveling further than it should, or failing to return to the neutral (open center) position. This is typically caused by mechanical binding inside the valve slice, a failed internal position transducer, or a loss of calibration.

Check the cause
Armrest Potentiometer Check: Check if the tractor thinks the lever is in a detent position when it is physically in neutral.
Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors running from the armrest controls to the EHR controller, and from the controller to the remote valves. Look for shorts, opens, or corrosion.
Mechanical Binding: Check if the spool is physically stuck due to debris or internal wear. If the spool cannot physically return to neutral, the valve will shut down the output stage to prevent damage.
Attempt Recalibration: Before replacing hard parts, always attempt to recalibrate the EHR valves to see if the controller can relearn the spool's travel limits.
Repair steps
Calibrate the EHR Valve
Enter the tractor's calibration menu via the A-post display or Pro 700 monitor. Select the calibration mode for the remotes. Pull the affected lever fully back into the raise detent, then push it fully forward into the lower detent, and finally return it to neutral. Turn off the key and wait at least 30 seconds before restarting the tractor to test. (Note: Some specific MX series tractors may require a dealer calibration tool, part # CAS2806, which is a pressure transducer that plugs into the test port to monitor load sense signal pressure during calibration).
Replace the Armrest Switch (If Calibration Fails)
If the valve calibrates but the error returns immediately, or if the lever position on the display does not match physical movement, replace the SCV potentiometer/switch in the armrest.
Replace the EHR Valve Section (If Spool is Mechanically Faulty)
If the armrest switch is functioning but the valve spool physically cannot reach the open center (neutral) position, the valve slice has failed internally. Relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system. Disconnect the electrical harness from EHR Valve 1. Unbolt the valve stack tie-rods and carefully remove the faulty EHR valve section. Install the new Electronic Hydraulic Remote Valve section using new O-rings between the valve slices and apply a light coating of hydraulic oil during assembly. Re-torque the valve stack tie-rods to factory specifications. Bleed the hydraulic system to remove any air pockets. Perform a final EHR calibration on the new valve.
