R22

Case IH R22 – EHR Control Unit: EHR Control Unit 2 Active Switch Error

Issue description

This fault code indicates a malfunction or communication failure with the "active switch" for the Electronic Hydraulic Remote (EHR) Valve #2. The system is detecting an electrical fault, such as a short circuit, open circuit, or implausible signal coming from the switch that controls the second hydraulic remote valve.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM120
  • MXM130
  • MXM140
  • MXM155
  • MXM175
  • MXM190
  • MXU Series
  • Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. On-Board Diagnostics (H-Menu): Enter the tractor's built-in diagnostic "H-Menu". Navigate to menu H5 to test the switch inputs. Verify if the EHR 2 switch registers when toggled.

  2. Harness & Continuity Check: With the power and keyswitch OFF, disconnect the connectors at both ends of the circuit (from the cab controls to the EHR controller, and controller to the valve). Use a multimeter to measure circuit resistance and check for continuity.

  3. Short to Ground Test: Inspect the wiring harness for chafing or a short to ground. If a short to ground is indicated, repair the harness.

  4. Fuse Inspection: Check Fuse 12. If blown, replace it. Turn the keyswitch OFF and ON to see if the code clears.

  5. Software/Controller Check: If the harness and fuses are okay but the code persists, the service manual notes that the correct level of software may need to be downloaded, or the secondary controller (CFPS) may be failing.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery if performing harness repairs.

  2. Access the Switch

Remove the side console/armrest trim to access the EHR remote levers and switches.

  3. Disconnect and Remove

Unplug the electrical connector for the EHR 2 switch/lever assembly. Remove the retaining screws holding the switch module in place.

  4. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue, use a harness repair kit to extract the damaged pins, cut the wire to the required length, crimp new pins, and insert them into the connector.

  5. Install New Switch

Mount the new EHR switch/lever assembly into the console and reconnect the wiring harness.

  6. Recalibrate the System

After replacing the switch, a potentiometer, or a controller, the system must be recalibrated. Enter the H-Menu and navigate to H1 (Calibration). Follow the on-screen prompts on the instrument cluster to calibrate the travel limits of the new EHR 2 switch.
