R28

Case IH R28 – EHR (Electronic Hydraulic Remote) Controller: EHR Control Unit 2 Lever Faulty

Issue description

Indicates a malfunction, signal failure, or calibration error in the electronic lever (or its internal potentiometer) that controls the #2 Electronic Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM Series (120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190)
  • Magnum Series (180, 200, 210, 215, 220, 260, 315, 380)
  • Puma Series (140-240, 175 CVX)
  • Maxxum Series (110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 140)
  • Steiger / Quadtrac Series (350 to 600 horsepower models)

Check the cause

  1. Check for neutral position errors: observe if the green cylinder light on the A-post display remains on when the lever is in neutral. If pulling the switch back slightly turns it off, the potentiometer is failing or out of calibration.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness from the armrest controls to the EHR controller to rule out a short or open circuit.

  3. Attempt a battery reset by disconnecting the tractor's battery for a short period to clear temporary glitches.

  4. Attempt lever calibration (via A-post on Magnum/Steiger or H-Menu on MXM models). If calibration fails and throws a code, the potentiometer is likely dead.

Repair steps

  1. Power down and disconnect battery

Power down the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Disassemble console

Disassemble the armrest console or side panel to access the underside of the EHR lever bank.

  3. Disconnect wiring harness

Disconnect the wiring harness connector specifically routed to the #2 EHR lever.

  4. Remove faulty lever

Unbolt or unclip the faulty lever assembly from the control bank.

  5. Install new lever

Install the new replacement lever and reconnect the wiring harness.

  6. Reassemble console

    Reassemble the armrest console.

  7. Reconnect battery and calibrate

Reconnect the battery and perform the EHR lever calibration procedure so the controller can learn the new lever's exact neutral, extend, and retract voltage parameters.
